The Suicide Squad movie review

After five years of introducing the suicide squad, here we come to the second sequel. However, this chapter is a little different, with new crew members, new story. The only thing that stayed constant is that the suicide squad is a suicide squad formed by the government of the US of America secretly and indirectly. The reason for giving birth to this squad is literally in order to perform suicidal fragile missions; like controlling a dissident superhero or face a national threat. So officially there is no existence of the suicide squad.

And when we say a suicidal squad, the squad will either finish the job or die trying.

In this sequel of the suicide squad, our team faces a new mission, by the lead of (Viola Davis), Amanda uses some techniques to control the inmates participating in the squad, depending on with character we are talking about, for an instant, she can reduce the punishment period by years, or can simply threaten them by the family members… So the mission at hand is eliminating a deadly, unorthodox, weapon-based outside of America.

Let’s dive a little into the pros of The Suicide Squad movie. Firstly, we have a well-balanced variety of characters, some of them have some kind of superpower; the others are just so good at something like hand-to-hand combat… Secondly, the cast, we have a set of respected actors; for an instance, we have Viola Davis still continuing with us and performing Amanda’s character. Idris Elba makes his day view in the squad with the role of Bloodsport, John Cina’s first appearance with the character of Piecemaker, moreover, we have Margot Robbie still with us in the role of Harley Quinn; In addition to a group of other weird characters like the chark character.

The variety of characters adds value and amusement to the movie, moreover, establishing a bond. The value appears either in the action scenes which depends so much on the competencies and capacities of each character or in the comedy lines.

Thirdly, another good thing about The Suicide Squad 2021 movie; Yeah right, we have already seen the story before, bad guys going on a secret mission against a bunch of worst guys; yeah defiantly saw that scenario before. However, if we focus a little on the events of the movie, they are sincerely amazing and way better than the first sequel, Especially the recruiting part and the final part, my teacher used to say “in a scenario if you have mentioned a nail, you can’t just leave it there, you better use it to hang the hero at the end!”. And that is what we saw in The Suicide Squad, a lot of random things have been cultivated throughout the movie, and used at the last part of the movie as good twists…

Moreover, what I liked about The Suicide Squad movie is that at the end of the film; I found myself attached to the majority of the characters. Don’t get me wrong, there is no deepness to the characters but nevertheless, they are cool and funny, crazy. Talking about crazy, we have Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn, keep in mind that this is her third time performing the role, so she is easily the first character that we have a bond to.

The Suicide Squad Cast

Let’s begin with Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn). This is the third film we see the character, we know her background, how she was a doctor turned by Joker and embraced the criminal world, the problem that I have with the character is how can she be that good at hand to hand combat, and at using guns, I don’t think that this was explained at any of the previous movies, and keep in mind that I don’t read the comics, so that can be explained there, However, the execution of Harley Quinn by Margot Robbie was off the charts and had proven to the skeptics that she is the right one to play Harley Quinn.

Margot Robbie gives us Harley Quinn with a high level of efficiency and a mix of cuteness; beauty, stupidity, and unexpected craziness. But as I said I have a problem with the explanation of how can she perform the fighting scenes; other than that Margot Robbie is perfect.

Secondly, we have Amanda played by Viola Davis. Man, this woman has impeccable convincing acting, it is hard to find a bad film of her, and of course; I enjoyed her performance here in The Suicide Squad 2021. She gave us a stoic strong boss, who only cares about the results no matter how much the price, but as the first sequel, the appearance of Viola Davis was rare on screen! So the acting was impeccable but she didn’t get much time on screen.

John Cina, I don’t know if I mentioned in The Fast and Furious 9 review, that I had a hard time watching John Cina on screen, he has sloppy unsatisfying acting, especially in complicated roles like in the role of Jacob in the Fast and Furious 9, and my opinion on his acting did not change in The Suicide Squad, he is the successful entertainer, the beloved wrestler, and the least expressive face in all humankind, putting a mask on his face during the movie was a brilliant idea. On the other hand, the character that he plays in the movie (peacemaker) is one of the most characters that make sense in the story and helps in building the events of the movie.

Idris Elba’s character Bloodsport, to be honest, was good and charismatic, but the sad thing is that he was oppressed by a cheap dialogue, in addition to the wrong building of the character, for instance, you can get confused just asking if he a good or bad guy, anyway he was a mess but Idris Elba for the good actor he is, he did his best to play the character. Michael Rooker also was a nice addition to the movie; I liked his character and wish he had more time on screen.

you can take a look at Idris Elba’s Concrete Cowboy movie review and Molly’s Game movie review.

We have Sylvester Stallone performing a voiceover of a shark running on two feet called Nanaue; offers a much more silly and charming performance than you would expect.

Moreover, what adds more value to The Suicide Squad movie is the cinematography, there was plenty of good, creative filming choices, for instance, in a bloody fighting scene instead of the blood there were flowers coming out, so that was a kind of amazing to the eye. Another example, a fighting scene was shot in the reflection of a mask. These scenes and many others added more esthetic and bring more value to the watching experience!

The soundtrack choices were extremely good; we have John Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues (it has also been used in the movie Wrath Of Man), People Who Died, Sucker’s Prayer, I Ain’t Got Nobody (I really liked that one), Samba Na Sola…

Cons of the movie

Ok, let’s talk a little about the cons of the movie. In short, bad use of Drama! The movie is a comedy dominance, we can argue if it is funny or not, however; its category is Comedy, ok everything is good. What I have a problem with is inserting drama in some scenes and that made a disorder in The Suicide Squad movie. So if we took a closer look we will find that the beginning of the movie was good, the end was great; the middle was a little cringy, as a result of inserting unnecessary drama.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with drama, and we have reviewed some Action/ Drama movies like Greenland, Below Zero, and Snowpiercer, these movies have a good balance in mixing Action and Drama. There is no problem in mixing these two elements, on the contrary, we can come up with a good movie, But The Suicide Squad was missing the balance of the action and drama, and we can clearly see a dominance of Comedy, and Action, but an untimed arbitrary entrance in the middle of the movie of Drama that was not convincing at all, it’s sloppy!

The Last thing that I didn’t like about The Suicide Squad is the clear bad usage of CGI. I don’t know why but all 2021’s movies seem to have bad CGI, and we can touch that in The Suicide Squad, especially the scenes shot in daylight, you can tell that the green screen has been used and that they are not scenes shot outdoors. The fire you can tell that it is just a fabricated fire, I mean come on! if it is just a simple movie, we will overlook this CGI subject, but this is a superheroes movie; with more than a decent budget.

In conclusion

The movie may be about superhero characters on the surface, but it’s an in-depth movie that examines the nature of DC’s weirdest characters of all. Even the most bizarre of them like Polka-dot Man (David Dastmalchian) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) have depths that would have been worth exploring. Apparently, Gunn sympathizes with underdogs and abnormal people; and here he sends a twisted but touching love letter that the DC supervillains must have more time.

Gunn had previously expressed his love for the classic Suicide Squad comics released in 1987 by legendary John Ostrander, and while the film is not directly based on that story in any way, it is proudly inspired by it.

To sum up, we can definitely classify The Suicide Squad 2021 as the top 10 DC universe movies. We don’t know if there will be a third sequel to the franchise. But I hope that they learn from the mistakes of the first and second suicide squad; maybe we will see Will Smith again. And of course, it will be nice to see James Gunn again in the directing chair.
