The Misfits review

Today we have The Misfits movie review, I saw the poster was catching and figured it will be a good one; but to be honest, that wasn’t the case! Let me tell you why.

The movie is starring Pierce Brosnan, and directed by Renny Harlin, who is known for “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger”, and many others…

The events of The Misfits revolve around Richard Pace, “The professional of escaping from prison and the Notorious thief “. And this appears clearly from the beginning of the movie; where we see the skills of Richard Pace in performing a robbery and escaping prison. As a result, Richard meats four other professional thieves, every one of them has his own specialty. Thus, they begin planning their ” big, promising robbery “, so what is going to happen?

The movie is categorized as an action film, in the chair of directing we have Renny Harlin, whose most recognizable films are ” Die Hard 2″ starring Bruce Willis, and the amazing movie ” Cliffhanger ” starring Sylvester Stallone and “Driven”. Knowing that these were works of Renny Harlin gives you a relief that you are in good hands; and gives you hope that The Misfits is going to be a good action movie, for Renny Harlin has now years of experience. And with Pierce Brosnan (The ex-James Bond) in the leading role, this raises your expectations for the movie.

But unfortunately, that was not the case here! So, let us dig deep into the details.

The Misfits was a very bad watching experience, by all accounts, and from most cinematic aspects! Just a bunch of uncleared unexplained events spread all over the movie just for the sake of giving the false feeling of action and bad comedy at the most times.

In terms of directing, Renny Harlin failed so badly in delivering any good action, the scenario also was irrelevant; does not make sense, it makes you feel that something is wrong with this movie. On the other hand, there is a poor and lazy dialogue and a plot that relies on giving the thieves the stereotype image of the invincible, intelligent bad guys that can steal anything at any time in any place and get out of it like a knife cutting a cake. I mean come on! it’s a marketing movie with a budget of 15000000 dollars, and that is the best you can do??

In the same vein, the acting that is supposed to be a kind of a positive feature or a backbone supporting the movie has succeeded in letting the viewer down. To clarify, for an instant, the leading role of Pierce Brosnan in the character of Richard performed droopy languid acting, like if he was just wanting to end the filming to get the money and go. So, you found him on many occasions changing the tone of his voice in a weird way, totally non-professional!

On the other hand, Nick Cannon the funny guy who is supposed to add comedic value to the movie, I mean like the type of comedy Tyrese Gibson is bringing to The Fast and Furious franchise, it really helps in giving the viewer a break from all the action tension. Nick Cannon has definitely failed to deliver any comedy in a film that doesn’t have the action tension in the first place, was it his fault or the writer’s fault? I believe it is due to the bad writing of the movie.

The Misfits movie political problem

The film was co-produced by the Emirati company “Film Gate Production”; which caused a lot of controversy after the screening of the film. Qatar was referred to in The Misfits movie as Jazirestan, its citizens were accused of supporting terrorist organizations; the film also referred to Qatarian national institutions by their names! And portrayed figures such as Sheik Yusuf al-Qaradawi as a sponsor of terrorism while promoting the UAE as an oasis of Arab democracy.

In addition, the film clearly presented a highly stereotypical image of the Middle East that has been circulating for years in Europe and America, where Arab countries are nothing but desert places and sands, women in fancy clothes wearing half the veil and luxury hotels, further, to many of the usual “stereotypes”. A film produced in an Arab country was expected to promote content and present a closer picture of reality; and not just satisfy the Western romantic fantasies about the East, no offense.

In Conclusion

To sum up, The Misfits generally as a movie, can’t be categorized either as an action film or a thriller or a comedy! Man, even the theft process does not make you feel stressed nor feel concerned about the life of the characters, not to mention the silly theft plan!

With all that said, we do not recommend the movie, and in a chance, you were hoping to watch a theft movie like “Ocean’s Eleven” or “The Italian Job” or “Now you see me”, or an escape movie such as “Escape Plan”, you will be disappointed, big time!

On the other hand, the cinematography was good, there is plenty of nice views, taken from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the editing also was good. However, The Misfits movie can use some development in the writing of the script. And I believe, out of the political issue, it would have been a watchable movie anyway.

Who should not watch this movie? as Deadpool said, people with taste, people who don’t want to waste time, and money.
