Nightbooks movie trailer

Hi you guys, today we have Nightbooks movie review for parents, the film is recently featured on Netflix. Nightbooks is a horror movie directed by David Yarovesky, known for the movie “Brightburn”.

The events of the movie simply revolve around a boy Alex, Alex refuses to write scary stories again as the kids in his school make fun of him. Moreover, he just wants to be a normal kid that is all!

One day, he decides to burn these books, but, he got abducted by a witch. The witch made him her prisoner and made him read her a story of the stories he writes, each night; otherwise, she will kill him!

Meanwhile, Alex is planing for escaping the witch’s house, so will he be able to do that?

To be frank, Nightbooks is a movie that caught me of the guard! I wasn’t aware that it is being produced, I didn’t saw any trailers, anything! However, I decided why don’t give him a chance. Besides, there aren’t many movies around this couple of days so…

Nightbooks movie review for parents

So, without further ado, let’s dive in! Firstly, let’s start with the positives of Nightbooks. Parents out there must know that this is a PG-rated movie, there are no bloody scenes, no nudity or Violence or Gore.

Of course, there are no drugs, no alcohol, or smoking; But, there are some scenes that can be described as frightening, but to be honest, it’s more of a subjective description. However, it can be scary in the presence of a little kid.

Is Nightbooks movie good for kids

Nevertheless, as this is a review for parents, I need to discuss more the horror part of the movie. Because from the trailer you can tell that there are scenes that can be scary for kids.

Accordingly, the director David Yarovesky did a good job with choosing the decoration of the scenes. Furthermore, the whole design of the house and each room in it, and how big and melancholic the house is, even though the film is categorized as a “family movie“! But, we”ll get to that in a minute.

The decoration, the lightening, all these things were good, even eye-pleasing sometimes, there was the usage of the Neonlights on some occasions, and surprisingly their usage was right and well-timed. Especially the first scary scene of the movie.

Besides, you will find some long frightening scenes, especially when Alex and Yasmin try to escape the wich house, all that was presented professionally! The jumpscares weren’t all successful, however, successfully done.

As I said at first David Yarovesky directed Brightburn, and what distinguishes Brightburn is some nice jump scares. But, I didn’t like the movie as a whole. On the other hand, the best of David Yarovesky is Nightbooks.

Cast

Ok, let’s talk a little about the characters and the screenplay, shall we? Firstly, the building of the characters was great, and as the movie goes, we get to know the backstory of each character; so you can easily sympathize with them.

The stories for the record, are a little cliché. However, they are well presented. Secondly, the casting was impeccable! all actors did great, Natacha the witch, Alex, Yasmin, all of them were good. Krysten Ritter in the role of the witch gave us one of her great performances. It is not relevant but she really reminded me of her role in Breaking Bad.

Credit to the one who did the make-up and the dressing of the witch, I love it! The soundtracks used were great. However, parents should be aware that the soundtrack may scare little kids.

But to be honest, the movie is a great watching experience, you feel like watching a family horror movie; it looks a kind of classic. The movie was good in terms of directing, and horror ( it is not that horrific), Mystery, tension, the CGI in some scenes also; the CGI was not that good but it’s okay.

In Conclusion

Nightbooks is a surprisingly entertaining movie. Still, no movie is perfect, and this film has some negatives. Firstly, what we see in all horror movies, the dumb decisions made by the characters, but you can overlook it. Secondly, there were some comedy scenes, but they are not funny.

Thirdly, in some scenes, we sense that the script treats Alex and Yasmin as if they are adults, and it was a little disturbing. But, luckily that wasn’t the case during all the film.

We suggest for you 10 movies like Nightbooks

To sum up, there are some clichés in Nightbooks, but the fact that I saw the movie without doing the research, and without any high expectations. Moreover, I did not even see the trailer, The movie was great, and I can say that I saw a nice horror film.

The film is a family film, there was no blood, there were some scenes that can be considered scary for kids. However, I see that Nightbooks is considered one of the best movies of September. The film is recommended, especially for horror fans.

Still, don’t raise your expectations, it is a casual horror movie, but there are things to enjoy in it, directing CGI…
