Midnight Mass Review

Okay guys, welcome back to another review, today we are reviewing Midnight Mass series. The show is directed and written by the genius Mike Flanagan.

In case you didn’t know, Flanagan is known for some impeccable movies and series we name: The Haunting of Hill House, One of Netflix’s finest series, in my opinion, Doctor Sleep 2019, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Jessie (AKA Gerald’s Game), Hush and more.

a man and a dog, midnight mass series

With that being said, the show is a short series consisted of seven well-written thick episodes. The events of the series revolve in an atmosphere of Drama and Horror and Mystery, about the citizens of an isolated island.

Coinciding with the arrival of a new priest, the life of the island’s citizens turns upside down. So, as I said, once the priest arrived on the island some miracles, weird supernatural dark things start accruing.

I tip my hat to the director, the quality of his writing is just off the charts impeccable! He simply loves what he does, take for example the movie Hush, without any spoilers, the main character in Hush was writing a book with the title Midnight Mass.

And from the events of the movie, we understand that Midnight Mass the book is the series itself if that makes sense. If this means anything, then it means that Flanagan was already plotting for the series before 2016, wow! It looks simple and not a big deal but trust me it is!

Flanagan just plans his projects from a distance, and to appreciate that I encourage you to take a look at Hush movie after you finish this series. Because the connection between the two shows is just mind-blowing guys! Take for instance the cast in Hush and the characters in this show.

Lol, enough hype for the director and let’s talk a little about the characters of the series itself. Okay, the series is starring a collection of excellent actors, Hamish Linklater, Alex Essoe, Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, and others.

Bottom line is that there is a lot of actors and characters. However, each one of them had his due, and the performance was as good as you can expect from a horror series honestly.

Let’s talk writing of the series, the writing of the show is perhaps one of the most amazing horror scripts I’ve ever seen.

We all know the good from the bad movie or series at the beginning of it, some writers bet on planting hooks at the end of each episode, to make you watch more episodes.

On the other hand, there are directors that simply take the time to build a full world, with its full details and its charming characters, well-written characters that you can relate to. And if you are into that kind of thing, that is exactly the case in this series.

It’s true that the category is Horror, but not that horrific. It’s scary in terms of the questions he makes you ask. Moreover, the mystery of its characters, more importantly, the horror of a fact that is just gets thrown surprisingly at you at some point.

So don’t expect some cheap horror, you are in Flanagan’s hands, good hands. I’m sorry if I’m overhyping the man, but we got to credit what he does. He can take a cliché story and make something good out of it.

I’m not going to go over the limits here and spoil the fun for you, There is a lot of things to enjoy, really. So, anyone that says there is a script or scenario or writing crisis in the industry hit him with Flanagan movies.

The characters diversity

The characters are deep, realistic, unique, and well-written. None of them is similar to the other, although their diversity. So, generally, there was a good set of excellent characters, different ages, different interests, different social classes, different religions, there are fanatics… and you can imagine all of this diversity is concentrated in seven episodes, in a small population of a small isolated island!

And even though this variety of characters there was room for them to improve over the course of the episodes, characters go from atheist to real faithful person, people fighting through depression, all this and more happened to the series’ characters.

And that did definitely not happen in a sudden way, rather in a gradual one. The bottom line is these are characters that you really feel alive if you will.

You can expect some captivating monologues especially with Hamish Linklater, monologues with deep messages, monologues with some weight on them if you will.

Samantha Sloyan also did a really good job, a purely evil character. Bottom line is that all the characters of the show took their space to grow.

In conclusion

I can’t speak about screenplay without talking about the plot of Midnight Mass, but I don’t see a way to do it without spoilers, so what you need to know is that the plot is perhaps one of the most marvelous plots of the Netflix series I’ve ever seen.

The series asks a ton of questions, with a flawless plot. Yeah that is it, thank you for reading the review, give me your thoughts in the comments, I would like to read them.
